Huntsville Rocket City Slingers

We are a group devoted to sharing the art of babywearing. We strive to teach new and experienced parents the skills needed to wear their children successfully and safely. At our meetings, we provide a place where our members can share their experiences, try on different carriers and ask questions. It is a great opportunity to get out and meet other Moms. New members and your children are always welcome. Please join us for our Free monthly meetings the first Wednesday of every month.

If you already babywear, we still want to meet you. You never know when you might teach us something new!

Hello! My name is Destiny. I am the founder of HRCS in Huntsville, Alabama. I have two wonderful children. My son Gavin was born June 2004 and my baby girl Allison was born June 2007. Between the two of them, they keep me going!

I started babywearing with my little boy in a Snugli. I quickly realized that carrier was not going to work for us. I became a stroller mom. I wish I had known about all the other carriers that are out there when he was smaller. I started wrapping when my baby girl was about 2 months old with a piece of fabric I bought at the store. I found a few really great websites and online video that helped me learn to wrap. Allison loved to be wrapped! She would fall asleep and just be such a snuggle bug.

A great friend of mine asked me to join her with some ladies called the River City Slingers in Decatur, Alabama. I went to my first meeting when Allison was about 3 months. I started with wraps then I made my own Mei Tai. I currently use a Podaegi that I made after seeing a demonstration at the RCS meeting. I love my pod! I also love that I have had the opportunity to learn such a wonderful art.

Wearing my baby has helped me keep up with my little boy and still have his little sissy be a part of the fun. We go to the park, around town, work in the yard, I clean the house, all with her right there safely on my front, hip or back. Babywearing has been such a rewarding experience for our family. I hope to see you at the next meeting where we can help you get "wrapped up" in the fun!

I'm Vera, mom to Joshua (6/04) and Aaron (11/06). I started babywearing when Joshua was a newborn, home from the NICU 6.5 weeks before his due date. I wore him in a stretchy ring sling that a friend had given me. While using that sling, I sewed up a woven ring sling... literally, I sewed while wearing him. I loved wearing him in the sling, especially for shopping trips, so I could keep people's hands off my little preemie.

As he got older, I learned to use a Mei Tai. When I started wearing Aaron, I learned to use a stretchy wrap. I had always been intimidated by it, but then I finally read a good tutorial on how to wrap, and I tried it. Lo and behold, it was much easier than it looked! Aaron quickly got heavy for a stretchy wrap, so I switched to my trusty Mei Tai. I later made a Soft Structured Carrier (SSC), which I use most of the time for him now. I can quickly put him on my back and walk into a store, having my hands free.

I have had herniated disc issues in the past, and wearing my heavy baby, even as he's getting close to 30 lbs, is easy and painless. I discovered the River City Slingers shortly after I started wrapping Aaron, and now I've helped to co-found the Huntsville Rocket City Slingers. I look forward to helping others wear their babies safely in comfortable carriers!
